The unique in-patient unit at Glasgow Homoeopathic Hospital has been saved from closure thanks to a vigorous campaign led by patients and staff. Members of the Greater Glasgow NHS Board delivered the good news at a meeting yesterday, where they also spoke about the possibility of expanding rather than reducing the hospital’s role.

The board had originally planned to close the in-patient unit as part of wider cost-cutting measures in a bid to save nearly £60m over the next two years. It was estimated that the closure would save £250,000 although this did not take into account the cost of providing alternative care for dispersed patients.

This is great news for homeopathy! It is hoped that the development will provoke a wider debate on the role homeopathy has to play as part of an integrative healthcare system. The Glasgow Herald said the decision ‘has been greeted by some as a landmark moment in the debate about the role of holistic medicine within the NHS north of the border’ whilst the Glasgow Evening Times celebrated the victory for ‘people power’ and described the integrated service at the hospital as ‘gold-standard’.
