Issue 3
Your e-newsletter from the British Homeopathic Association

Welcome to Issue 3 of BHA Bytes! It feels like spring is on its way at the time of writing, but perhaps I shouldn't speak too soon...people are certainly still suffering with winter colds and flu! Hopefully some of the advice in this issue will help you out if you are one of those people.

Another positive study into the effectiveness of homeopathy has just been published - a Dorset GP has seen an improvement in 78% of the patients he treats homeopathically. Read more below. Also, Nelsons are giving away a lovely tea tree product when you join us as a friend of the British Homeopathic Association.

Don't forget, the newsletter is now also available on our website at www.trusthomeopathy.org/emailnews.html where you can view back issues as well.

Positive results for homeopathy in 12 month study of GP's practice
A new study by Dorset GP Dr Tim Robinson shows that a wide range of conditions can be successfully treated by homeopathy in a standard 10 minute GP consultation.

Dr Robinson, who practises both conventional medicine and homeopathy, gave 5331 consultations in a year, of which 489 or 9% were homeopathic. Patients were offered homeopathic treatment when appropriate, as an alternative to conventional treatment or when conventional treatment had nothing to offer. An impressive 78% of the patients he treated homeopathically reported a positive clinical response.

Patients were treated for a variety of ailments, including ear, nose and throat complaints (mainly respiratory tract infections), mental/psychological illnesses such as anxiety, grief, shock and panic and dermatological conditions such as eczema. Many of these conditions are difficult to treat conventionally. For example, antibiotics are not indicated for viral infections but homeopathy can provide a useful alternative. Equally, for patients with psychological problems such as anxiety, where doctors are reluctant to prescribe tranquillisers and hypnotics, homeopathy can be an effective treatment.

Dr Robinson says: “All the consultations in this study were undertaken in routine GP appointments. Critics of homeopathy claim that one explanation for the successful response to homeopathic treatment is extended consultation time. They suggest that patients feel better having had the opportunity to talk at length about their condition and their concerns. This study does not support such a claim as all the consultations took place in a standard 10 minute GP appointment.”

The results of the study, published in Homeopathy journal last month, are consistent with a large number of other studies, both in primary and secondary care. Dr Robinson calls for a large-scale study of this or similar design to build up data that would give further insights into the use and effectiveness of homeopathy.

Focus on: Irritable Bowel Syndrome - how can homeopathy help?
In every issue we look at a particular condition for which homeopathic treatment can be of benefit.

In this issue, Sarah Fielding, 60, from Dorset, describes how homeopathy is helping her to cope with Irritable Bowel Syndrome, which she has suffered from for many years. Sarah was given homeopathic treatment by her GP, who is trained in homeopathy.

For how long have you been affected by Irritable Bowel Syndrome?
I have suffered with IBS for over 10 years.

What treatments did you try before turning to homeopathy?
Conventional drugs including Colofac and various over the counter remedies. I also tried preparations containing peppermint.

How did you get access to homeopathic treatment?
I went to my GP for a conventional consultation, and I was asked if I would consider homeopathic treatment. It was at this point that I discovered that my GP was trained in homeopathy. After a discussion on the subject I decided to try it, as other treatments had failed to solve the problem.

What effect is homeopathy having on your IBS?
It is working! After about four days I felt totally different. I would say it took about two weeks for me to feel better. I was very impressed with how fast the remedy worked.

Which homeopathic remedy were you prescribed?
Lycopodium.

How often do you need to use your homeopathic remedy?
I can manage without it from time to time for up to a week. I start taking it again when the symptoms begin to return. Most of the time one dose a day is sufficient.

What would you say to somebody who believes that homeopathy is a placebo effect?
Given that I didn't seek out the treatment and therefore had no preconceived ideas as to its effectiveness, having had no previous experience or knowledge of homeopathy, I can't see that it is a placebo effect.

The homeopathic remedy Gelsemium is often used for the treatment of influenza, particularly if the patient has a sore throat, feels limp, is prone to a fever and headaches and has heavy, bleary eyes. The remedy is made from the fresh root of yellow jasmine, and is also used to treat neurological disorders and anticipatory fears.

Homeopathy for animals
Did you know that most illnesses in animals will respond to homeopathic medicines?

Conditions that are known to respond well include atopic dermatitis, arthritis, epilepsy, hyperthyroidism, musculo-skeletal conditions, flu, catarrh, sinusitis, coughs, bronchitis, pneumonia, pleurisy and behavioural problems. Homeopathy can be used equally well for both acute conditions and for more chronic problems, when more prolonged treatment may be required.

The BHA's list of practitioners includes veterinary surgeons, who are subject to the regulations both of the Faculty of Homeopathy and the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons.

The qualification to look out for is VetMFHom or VetFFHom - this indicates the highest level of Faculty training. These vets can take referrals and many use homeopathy as their main therapeutic approach. Other vets have achieved the LFHom(Vet) qualification which indicates a basic level of homeopathic training.
