EDM 1240 NHS HOMEOPATHIC HOSPITALS 28.03.2007 Vis, Rudi MP That this House welcomes the positive contribution made to the health of the nation by the NHS homeopathic hospitals; notes that some six million people use complementary treatments each year; believes that complementary medicine has the potential to offer clinically-effective and cost-effective solutions to common health problems faced by NHS patients, including chronic difficult to treat conditions such as musculoskeletal and other chronic pain, eczema, depression, anxiety and insomnia, allergy, chronic fatigue and irritable bowel syndrome; expresses concern that NHS cuts are threatening the future of these hospitals; and calls on the Government actively to support these valuable national assets.
| Members of the Government or the opposition front benches will not usually sign EDMs. However, we do need strong cross party support and at least 200 MPs' signatures to have influence.

Good results for homeopathy in pets A pilot study undertaken by eight vets found that 79% of animals treated with homeopathy over a six-month period showed an improvement in their condition, according to their owners*. A total of 767 animals were assessed, with particularly good results for arthritis and epilepsy in dogs and hyperthyroidism in cats. Co-author Dr Robert Mathie commented: "Although research has shown that homeopathy can be effective in treating mastitis in cows, there has been little investigation into the use or effectiveness of homeopathy in companion animals. Homeopathic vets and pet owners frequently report successful results from the therapy, and further good quality research is required. This pilot is the first step towards the identification of suitable future research projects." Find a homeopathic vet in your area

| Belladonna for feverish illnesses
Atropa Belladonna, more commonly known as Deadly Nightshade, belongs to the Solanaceae family and as its common name suggests, is rather more toxic than its relatives, the potato and the tomato! The homeopathic medicine made from the plant was first used to treat scarlet fever in the 19th century. It is used effectively nowadays to treat acute illnesses where there is a sudden, violent onset. There may be a high fever, dilated pupils, or flushing due to increased blood circulation – commonly indicated conditions include influenza, teething in babies, acne rosacea and sunstroke. Homeopathy for allergies More people than ever seem to be suffering from auto-immune diseases these days, including allergies. In allergy sufferers, certain antibodies have an excessive reaction to an allergen, such as dust mites for example, and begin to produce large quantities of histamine when they bind to those particular allergens, resulting in distressing and sometimes dangerous symptoms. Hay fever, rhinitis, coeliac disease, conjunctivitis, eczema, urticaria and some forms of asthma are all allergies. There is positive, clinical evidence to show that homeopathy can help in many of these conditions.
In treating any allergy, a consultation with a homeopathic doctor is always recommended to ensure that the homeopathic medicine is tailored to you personally.
