High profile support for homeopathy
A number of MPs turned out to support the homeopathic hospitals at a parliamentary reception at Portcullis House on 4 March. Actors Susan Hampshire and Charles Collingwood (who stars in Radio 4's The Archers) were amongst the guests. Rousing speeches were made by David Treddinnick MP, Clinical Director of the RLHH Peter Fisher and Jane Gilchrist, 94, an astoundingly tireless BHA Friend and supporter of homeopathy.

The reception followed an earlier debate in parliament in February on the future of the homeopathic hospitals - the transcript is available here (scroll down to column 323).

Respite for Tunbridge Wells Homeopathic Hospital
West Kent Primary Care Trust has rescinded its decision to cut funding for patients to attend Tunbridge Wells Homeopathic Hospital pending a legal action. The PCT is contesting the application for judicial review which is being brought by two patients whose continuing treatment was threatened by the funding cut approved by the PCT board last September.

Although the application for a judicial review was subsequently rejected by the court, an appeal is to be made against the court’s decision. For the time-being at least, it is business as usual at TWHH. New referrals are being accepted and existing patients are able to continue their treatment.

Patient story: getting back my life
Heather Hawkins, who suffers from ME, talks about her treatment at the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital.
"I have been ill for 21 years. I was studying for my GCSEs when I started suffering from a glandular fever type illness and chronic fatigue. I then developed numerous other problems such as severe muscle and joint pain and inflammation, immobility and asthma. I also started experiencing various rather bizarre neurological problems such as jerking, swallowing difficulty, problems with my vocal chords and photosensitivity. I began to need full time care from my mother and have continued to do so since. Luckily my GP at the time was very supportive but the consultants at my local hospital, with the exception of one, were unsympathetic to my problems and dismissed them as “all in my mind”.

After three years of not knowing what was wrong with me, I was referred to the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London. I was diagnosed with a severe form of ME and prescribed various vitamin supplements to try to keep me as well as possible. At the time I was also taking anti-inflammatory drugs for the joint inflammation. However, by the time I was in my early twenties, these had caused me to have a stomach ulcer. I was advised to stop taking them immediately and referred ‘next door’, to the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital, to see if they could help me.

I was referred to the Allergy and Environment Medicine Clinic at RLHH. I was tested for food intolerances, which revealed that I was intolerant to a wide range of foods, especially wheat and gluten. I have since undergone regular EPD injections, which combined with an exclusive diet, have helped control the inflammation in my joints and muscles. The EPD injections for inhalants have enabled me to reduce the amount of steroid inhalers which I was taking for my asthma. Various other homeopathic remedies have also been invaluable in helping to control the neurological problems to a manageable level. I regularly take Causticum, Ruta Grav and Cuprum/Nux Vom.

Both my mother and I feel that my illness has given us the opportunity to meet many kind people who we would otherwise not have met. Many of these people work at the RLHH. I know when I visit the hospital I will be supported in finding the treatment most suited to my needs. My thoughts on the management of my illness will be taken into account too, as an essential part of the treatment process. The hospital provides a life line to those for whom conventional medicine has proved unsuitable. For patients like me, it is essential that this unique service remains available on the NHS. It is no exaggeration to say the RLHH has given me back my life."

BBC removes CAM section from website
The BBC has removed information on complementary medicine from its web pages in what the Corporation says is part of a review of all health content on the site. Following a number of complaints the BBC has issued a statement explaining that the CAM section "represented a small proportion of traffic to the website but was disproportionately time consuming" and that the content was "incomplete".

The Faculty of Homeopathy has enquired formally to the Director General about the decision and awaits a response. To tell the BBC what you think about this decision, visit http://www.bbc.co.uk/feedback
